In statistics, the lowercase [math]\displaystyle{ \nu }[/math] can be used to represent degrees of freedom.[1] In physics, the same letter can also used to represent kinematic viscosity and the frequency of a wave.[2]

When typesetting mathematics, sometimes the roman lowercase [math]\displaystyle{ v }[/math] is used in conjunction with [math]\displaystyle{ \nu }[/math], sometimes leading to problems with both letters being indistinguishable from each other in some fonts.
