Fons Panis

Alphons Leo Walter Joseph Panis (16 August 1932 – 15 January 2023) was a Dutch politician of the Anti-Revolutionary Party and later Christian Democratic Appeal. Panis was mayor of Maartensdijk (1973–1978) and mayor of Leusden (1987–1997).

Biography

Panis was born in Berkel-Enschot in 1932. His father Alphons Panis [nl] (1900–1975) was twice mayor of Berkel-Enschot and in between mayor of Haaren. His uncle was architect Constant Panis [nl] (1891-1972).[1]

Panis attended gymnasium in Tilburg. After completing his military service, he studied Dutch law at the University of Utrecht. After his graduation in 1960, he started his civil service career at the General Affairs department of the province of Utrecht. He later became secretary of the Midden-Utrecht circle. Subsequently he was acting secretary of the cooperation body agglomeration Eindhoven. In May 1973 he became mayor of Maartensdijk. During his term as mayor, new-build neighborhoods were established on the south side of the village of Maartensdijk, like the the 'Kruidenbuil', as well as the new-build neighborhoods of Groenekan and Westbroek. Panis opposed the abolition of the municipality of Maartensdijk. In mid-1987 Panis became mayor of Leusden. He was the mayor of Leusen until 1997.[2][3]

Panis died in Amersfoort on 15 January 2023, at the age of 90.[4]
