Realizzato nel 1870, ha origine dal Canale Cavour a nord di Novara e convoglia le acque verso sud ed est, fornendole ai comuni di Garbagna, Terdobbiate e Tornaco. All'altezza di Cilavegna si biforca poi in due subdiramatori. Con una portata stimata di circa 12 mc/s, in zona rappresenta l'arteria principale per l'irrigazione, distribuendo l'acqua ai canali e collettori di ordine inferiore.
