Summary
DescriptionChainwale.jpg
English: The chainwale is the thick plank on the outside of the hull to which the shrouds are fastened. On Vasa, the chainwale is above the gunports of the upper deck. The load of the shrouds is transferred to metal chains which are bolted to the hull below the chainwale. On Vasa, the chainwale's outer edge is angled upwards. On other ships the surface of the chainwale is horizontal, in which case the structure needs substantial bracing to avoid being pushed out of position by the load in the shrouds.
