Deutsch: Das Wappen ist seit ca. 1500 überliefert. Am 14. Juni 1939 legte der Oberpräsident das Wappen amtlich fest.
Der Kuhkopf steht vermeintlich redend für den Ortsnamen. Das altsächsische Wort ‚ko’ bedeutet Kuh. Das Bild kommt bereits seit 1292 auf Sekretsiegeln vor. 1578 erscheint es erstmals auch auf den städtischen kupfernen Scheidemünzen. Die Wappenfarben Rot und Gold gelten als altüberliefert und sind wohl eine Anleihe aus dem Wappen der Fürstbischöfe von Münster, die zeitweise auch in Coesfeld residierten.
English: The arms were granted on June 14, 1939. The cow's head in the arms is canting (from "Kuh", compare Dutch Koe, both meaning cow), but bears no ethymological relation to the name of the town. The head already appears in a seal of the city from 1291. Older seals show the patron saint, St. Lambert between two towers. Since 1392 the head is used as the main symbol on the seals and arms. From 1578-1763 the city struck its own coins, also with the head. |
