Description |
English: Nativity in the desert
Neyshâburi, Qesas al-anbiyâ (stories of prophets) [QazviN] (Iran), around 1595. Paper, 192 f., 29.5 × 20.5 cm BNF, Department of Manuscripts, Persian Supplement 1313, F . 174 © National Library of France Executed for a high ranking character, this magnificent manuscript of prophets stories stages, in twenty miniatures, the biblical episodes selected by the Islamic tradition. This one recognizes Jesus as a prophet, but denies his divine filiation. The scene reproduced here could be attributed to Sâdeq Mêg (1533-1610), one of the great painters of the Royal Safavide workshop of Qazvîn. Resuming several Muslim legends, it represents the Child Jesus sitting on the knees of his mother, at the foot of a palm tree which has been covered with dates to his contact and near a source of fresh water that sprung there miraculously. . The Virgin Mary, who fled in the desert to give birth, wears a dress whose colors are of Christian inspiration, but whose style is typically Persian. The faces of Mary and Jesus are surrounded by flamed golden nimbes characterizing the spiritual state of the prophets. In the background, from behind the rocks, emerges the dark figure of a bearded man with long hair, which could be Satan. |
