Description
English: The sitter has been identified as Giulio Mascheroni of Bologna. Formerly identified as Giovanni Gabrielli (e.g., see Henner Menz [cited by Askew]), an Italian actor of commedia dell'arte, who should not be confused with the Italian composer Giovanni Gabrieli, this identification was rejected by both Mahon and Posner, according to Askew, who cites Malvasia to suggest the sitter was a member of the Mascheroni family of Bologna. The sitter is now believed to be Giulio Mascheroni (see References).
