| Blazon reference | Eine Urkunde aus dem Jahr 1240 im Österreichischen Staatsarchiv enthält den frühesten Nachweis für das Siegel und Wappen von Villach. Es ist dies übrigens der älteste Siegelnachweis aller österreichischen Städte. Dieses Siegel zeigte den Adlerfuß mit dynamisch gespreizten Krallenzehen und die lateinische Umschrift Sigillum civitatis villacensis (Siegel der Stadt Villach). Die Villacher Wappenfarben und jene der Stadtfahne sind Gelb (oder Gold) und Schwarz. Im Stadtrecht ist dieses traditionsreiche Wappen und die Fahne seit 1965 (und in allen folgenden Neufassungen) rechtlich verbindlich festgelegt. |

| Object history | Eine eindeutige Herkunftsklärung oder eine alte Sage zum Wappenbild und seinen Farben gibt es nicht, doch gilt es als sehr wahrscheinlich, dass der Krallenfuß vom Adler im Familienwappen des bambergischen Bischofs Ekbert von Andechs stammt, der ein besonders wichtiger Stadtherr Villachs gewesen ist und dem Bistum und seinem ausgedehnten Kärntner Herrschaftsbesitz von 1203 bis 1237 vorstand. |
