The Schools/projects gives school students a chance to write articles for the Simple English Wikipedia. Often articles written by students are deleted quickly because the are badly written, with poor spelling, and not formatted properly. This can be hard for students when the article is deleted before they have had a chance to finish it. This can be hard for teachers when the student's work is deleted before they have had a chance to correct it. The Schools/Projects guidelines have been written to fix these problems. Please read the "The teachers' guide" which will answer many questions about using the Wikipedia with students.

Creating a project

1. Create a school project: give a name, a description and an end date for the project on this page, (Wikipedia:Schools/Projects). This should include the names of all the pages, and a wikipedia editor who can be contacted if things go wrong. (see list below) There should be a point of contact for the project in case of any problems that may come up. This is usually one of the teachers.

2. Tag project pages: add this tag to the top of students pages: {{classproject| your project name}},

3. Use the sand box: have the students make their own sandbox, there are instructions on this page Wikipedia:User page. There is also a link at the bottom of every edit page. This is a User page where users can write their article and work on it until it is ready to be put onto the wiki. Wiki administrators do not normally delete things from a user's sandbox.

4. Use the edit summary: below the edit window is a place to write in a summary - this is a brief description of what you have edited, for example "Corrected spelling", or "added new section on ice cream". This helps other editors know what is happening on the page.

If you look at the Wikipedia:Deletion policy you will find that there are reasons why pages get "quickly deleted" (Normal deletion process takes a week).

Other pages that may be helpful:

This Wikipedia needs articles; If they are properly formatted and give interesting (verifiable) information, there is no reason to delete the articles at all.

Cégep de Saint-Hyacinthe

Welcome to the school project Cégep de Saint-Hyacinthe. This project aims to bring English students from Cégep de Saint-Hyacinthe to edit articles of Wikipedia in a fun way! Before editing Wikipedia, we will first do some reading exercises, then find subjects to edit, find sources and add one phrase. Depending on how it goes, we might go farther.

Historical Figures of the Middle Ages

We will be working with about 65 students to do some editing on Simple English Wikipedia. They are working on a project that involves researching female figures in the Middle Ages. They will research in library reference sources and then they will edit and cite the sources they reference in the Simple English Wikipedia article.

History of Psychology

We are working as part of the Association for Psychological Science (APS) Wikipedia project. Students in my class of 100 Rutgers undergraduates are learning to write and edit in Wikipedia, with the goal of increasing the number and quality of entries relevant to psychology. We are editing three articles on Simple English Wikipedia. We aspire to add articles both to Simple English Wikipedia and English Wikipedia. As the Fall 2013 semester progresses we will be soliciting feedback on new articles.

Historical Figures from China, Africa, and the Middle East

We will be working with about 65 students to do some editing on Simple English Wikipedia. They are working on a project that involves researching lesser-known historical figures from Imperial China and Africa, as well as figures from the Middle East. They will research in library reference sources and then they will edit and cite the sources they reference in the Simple English Wikipedia article.
