Biography

Muylaert was born in Herdersem on 17 January 1931.[1] As a politician he was a member of the Christian Social Party. After being in the opposition for six years, he became the mayor of Herdersem in 1970.[2] In 1976 the municipality merged with Aalst and the municipality of Herdersem was abolished. Together with other mayors (Robert De Pauw, Albert De Vos and Raymond Uyttersprot) he tried in vain to stop the merger.[3] After the merger and left politics; consciously chose not to enter the politics of Aalst.[2]

He became his entire life a known local person.[3][4] In 2018 he was appointed honorary mayor.[5][2] In 2016, 40 years after the merger, the media looked back on his time as mayor.[3]

Muylaert was married to Hedwige Bourgeois. They celbrated their diamond wedding (65 years) in 2023.[4] In January 2024 he had great-grandchild "Antoine", named after him.[6]

Muylaert died in "Dendderust" in Aalst on 12 November 2024, at the age of 93 years old.[1][7] There was a minute of silence for him in the Aalst city council on 19 November 2024.[8]
