Assault weapon
In the United States, the term assault weapon is used for some types of firearms. Usually these arms have a detachable magazine, a pistol grip and some have a vertical forward grip, flash suppressor or barrel shroud. Some firearms are specified by name.[1]

The distinguishing characteristics of 'assault weapons' are mainly cosmetic and have little or no functional significance in the context of mass shootings or ordinary gun crimes.
