British Rail Class 26
The British Rail Class 26 diesel locomotives, originally known as BRCW Type 2, were built by the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Company (BRCW) at Smethwick in 1958-59. Forty seven examples were built, and the last were withdrawn from service in 1993.

The Branch Line Society's "Northern Explorer" ran from Crewe through to Maxwelltown in amongst other freight branches on 3 August 1991. Seen here is 26041 in Railfreight livery which backed onto the rear of the train here at Carlisle with 31312 leading.

British Rail Class 26 D5304 entered service with British Railways in January 1959 and was renumbered 26004 in April 1974. It was withdrawn in November 1992 and taken into preservation.
