Bushwhacking was a kind of guerrilla warfare that happened often during the American Revolutionary War, American Civil War, and other wars with large areas of disagreeable land and few governmental resources to control them.

That was very common in rural areas during the Civil War since there was fighting between supporters of the Union and of the Confederacy in the war. The perpetrators of the attacks were called "bushwhackers.

The term "bushwhacking" is still in use today to describe ambushes that have attrition as their goal.[1][2]
