The Diet building

Diet of Japan (国会 Kokkai?) is the national bicameral legislature of Japan. The National Diet Building is in Nagatachō, Chiyoda, Tokyo.

It is made up of a the House of Representatives (lower house) and the House of Councillors (upper house).[1] The members of both houses of the Diet are directly elected. The Diet selects the Prime Minister.


The Diet was first convened as the Imperial Diet in 1889.[1]

In 1947, the Diet took its current form.[2]
