(Redirected from Extant taxon)
Jump to: navigation, search

In biology, an extant species is a living species, as contrasted with an extinct species. The term 'extant' can also be used to describe higher groups, such as genera or families, that are still in existence (living).[1]

Example: in the group of molluscs known as the cephalopods, there are about 600 extant species and 7500 extinct species. [1][2]
