Description18.09.84 Aylesbury Class 115 (6847433421).jpg
Aylesbury, 18 September 1984.
Class 115 high density suburban sets that were utilised on services from London Marylebone to Aylesbury and Banbury. In addition some were based at Allerton, for the Merseyside area, and latterly Tyseley, to work in the West Midlands. Built by BR at Derby Works in the early 1960s, they normally ran as 4-car sets, although in the 1980s some DMBS vehicles had a corridor connection fitted and were paired with redundant class 108 trailers from elsewhere to form 2-car power-trailer sets, which were used on lighter loaded services or to strengthen 4-car services to 6 vehicles, where 8 were not justified. They were serviced at Marylebone depot (for the Chiltern routes) and following closure of the depot maintenance was transferred to Bletchley until finally, following closure of that depot, the remaining sets were despatched to Old Oak Common. Withdrawn by 1992, they were largely replaced by class 165s and 168s.
