Summary

Description
English: To visitors, Saint Joseph's church is now principally known as a shrine for the Twenty Seven Commemorative Tablets dedicated to British and Dutch victims of Napoleone Buonaparte.

Saint Joseph's was initially built in 1687-1690 as "Royal Chapel" (royal, in honour of King Charles II of Spain), modified and expanded a few times over the centuries, one last time in 1855-1858 : on that occasion, all the commemorative tablets have been moved into the ailes, newly added to the nave.

A first two, perfectly recognizable ►(File:18 June 1815 – Waterloo – Saint Joseph's church, first commemorative tablets.jpg), had already been depicted in 1816 by James Rouse, while in the rotunda by then. The tablets eventually numbered 27.
