This MD-11 crashed off the coast of Nova Scotia, near Peggy's Cove, into the Atlantic Ocean on September 2, 1998, operating flight Swissair SR 111 (JFK - GVA - ZRH). 229 people died in that crash - the worst accident in Swiss aviation history. The cause was an on-board fire caused by an electrical fault. The crash caused the aircraft to disintegrate into more than 2 million pieces, and only one victim was visually identifiable. The aircraft was also carrying 15 tonnes of cargo, some of which has been lost.
