Summary
DescriptionAglaophyton major reconstruccion en.jpg
English: Artistic reconstruction of the Lower Devonian plant Aglaophyton major described from fossil remains in the Rhynie Chert. The upright form and dichotomous branching of the cylindrical aerial stems is shown along with the terminal fusiform sporangia. The rhizome, also cylindrical and dichotomously branching, is creeping, subaerial and has characteristic undulations. Where it is in contact with the substrate it has unicellular rhizoids (which are exaggerated in the illustration for ease of interpretation). Next to the main drawing there are drawings of a longitudinal section of the sporangium and of spores of the genus Retusotriletes, usually assigned to this species. A separate scale is given for each of the three elements.
This is a retouched picture, which means that it has been digitally altered from its original version. Modifications: Changed label from Spanish "Esporangio" to English/Latin "Sporangium". The original can be viewed here: Aglaophyton major reconstruccion.jpg: . Modifications made by Peter coxhead.
