Detalle de la carta enviada por Galileo a Belisario Vinta, escrita en Padova el 30.07.1610. La forma de Saturno vista por primera vez por el astrónomo pisano, recuadrada en verde. Aquí Galileo escribe: “Trátase de que la estrella de Saturno no es una sola, sino un agregado de tres que casi se tocan y que nunca se mueven o mudan entre sí, están dispuestas en fila a lo largo del Zodíaco, siendo la del medio tres veces mayor que las otras dos laterales y estando situadas de esta forma: oOo, …” De "Galileo-Kepler. El Mensaje y el Mensajero Sideral", Alianza Editorial. 1984. En otra carta dirigida a Giuliano de Médici, Galileo escribe: “…Observé que el planeta más alto era triple: Esto es, que con grandísima admiración por mi parte he observado que Saturno no es una sola estrella, sino tres juntas que casi se tocan. Están completamente inmóviles entre sí, dispuestas de esta guisa oOo, siendo la del medio bastante más grande que las laterales. Hállanse situadas una a oriente y a occidente la otra, exactamente en línea recta. No se encuentran justamente según la línea del Zodíaco, sino que la occidental se eleva un tanto hacia el Norte; tal vez sean paralelas a la línea equinoccial. Si se observase con un anteojo que no fuese de muchísimo aumento, no aparecerán tres estrellas bien distintas, sino que aparecerá que Saturno sea una estrella alargada en forma de aceituna, así [pequeña elipse]; mas sirviéndose de un anteojo que multiplique más de mil veces en superficie, se verán los tres globos clarísimos y casi tocándose, no apareciendo entre ellos una división mayor que un sutil hilo oscuro…” En aquellos días las luminarias conocidas eran sólo siete: Sol, Luna, Mercurio, Venus, Marte, Júpiter y Saturno (“el más alto”). |
