DescriptionAnna's hummingbird in nocturnal torpor during winter in Vancouver, BC.jpg
English: Female Anna's hummingbird in nocturnal torpor; 7.37 pm PT, -8 deg C, 22 Dec 2022; note frozen feeder fluid; Vancouver, BC. The bird had been aggressively defending the feeder during severe cold and a snow storm in daylight. I assumed it would roost in a nearby forest at dusk. When preparing to bring the frozen feeder in for the night, I saw the bird - either in torpor or frozen dead, as assumed - and left it still on the perch overnight. Note the eye reflected the camera flash - torpor evidently occurs with the eyes open. When I checked the feeder at 7 am the next morning, the bird's position was unchanged (at least 12 hours during torpor in the same position), then it flew away with my approach and resumed feeding on warmed nectar within minutes. It has remained a regular visitor to this feeder throughout 2022.
