Summary
DescriptionBanner of the Virginia Company.svg
English: Banner of arms of the Virginia Company, granted between 1619 and 1624 and subsequently used by the Virginian state:
Argent, a cross gules, between four escutcheons, each regally crowned proper, the first escutcheon in the dexter chief, the arms of France and England, quarterly; the second in the sinister chief, the arms of Scotland; the third the arms of Ireland; the fourth as the first.
The arms thus combine the English national flag with the royal arms of England (and France), of Scotland, and of Ireland in the same sequence as they are quartered in the royal arms of James VI and I and of subsequent British monarchs. The Elizabethan flag of the Levant Company and the arms of the Newfoundland Company had similar designs, each combining the St George's Cross of England with elements of royal heraldry. The contemporary arms of Nova Scotia employ a similar combination of St Andrew's Cross with the royal arms of Scotland.
