Description Brush Electric Company's New York central power plant's dynamo room which powered arc lamps for public lighting, 1880. Engraving from the cover of Scientific American April 2, 1881 issue depicts Charles F. Brush dynamos. Belts delivered power from the reciprocating steam engines in a lower floor. Beginning operation in December 20, 1880 at 133 and 135 West Twenty-Fifth Street, it powered a 2 mile long circuit consisting of 15 arc lights strung along Broadway from 14th to 26th street. Two weeks later, the line extended to 34th street. Each light had a shunt so that if a light exhibited high resistance, the shunt would close and current would continue to other lights on the line. source Each generator produced 10,000 volts. source
