Object history
English: The use of or, an eagle sable is based on the imperial banner of Oberhasli, which represented the territory's imperial immediacy ("Reichsunmittelbarkeit") from at least the late 13th century. An uncrowned eagle was also used in the seal of Landschaft Hasle from 1296.

The use of the crowned eagle can be traced to the late 15th century in the banner of Oberhasli, preserved in Haslimuseum Meiringen. This banner features a Swiss cross displayed above the crown, which, however, is not represented as part of the crown.

The coat of arms in its present form dates back to at least the 17th century, when it appeared in a heraldic pane of ca. 1680.

The canton of Bern's Executive Council convened the cantonal heraldic commission (Kantonale Wappenkommission) in 1943 with a brief of standardizing the canton's public heraldry. Based on the commission's recommendation, the District of Oberhasli adopted this design as its official insignia in 1944. The commission submitted a full report in 1946, at which point this design was also adopted by the district capital, Meiringen.

The publication of the heraldic commission's report in book form was delayed until 1981, when the Wappenbuch des Kantons Bern finally appeared. The book features coats of arms created by the graphic designer Hans Jenni.
