Object history
Deutsch: Die Stadt entstand durch Vereinigung der Stadt Freistett und der Gemeinde Rheinbischofsheim am 1. Januar 1975, nachdem zuvor schon Diersheim, Hausgereut, Helmlingen, Holzhausen, Hönau, Linx und Memprechtshofen nach Freistett oder Rheinbischofsheim eingemeindet worden waren. Hönau gehörte bis 1803 zum Territorium des Hochstifts Straßburg. Das übrige Gemeindegebiet bildet den Kern des rechtsrheinischen Teils der ehemaligen Grafschaft Hanau-Lichtenberg, des sogenannten Hanauerlandes. Der Begründer dieses Teils der Herrschaft war der Straßburger Bischof Konrad III. von Lichtenberg (1273-1299). Die Stadt wählte daher das Wappen der 1480 im Mannesstamm ausgestorbenen und zum Teil von den Grafen von Hanau beerbten Grafen von Lichtenberg als Stadtwappen. Es wurde mit der Flagge am 26. Juli 1978 vom Landratsamt Ortenaukreis verliehen.
