Object history Kaiser Friedrich III. verlieh Sulzthal 1472 Marktrechte. Abdrucke eines Siegels mit der Umschrift S. DES FLECKEN SOLCZTAL zeigen den Baum mit dem Großbuchstaben. Sie stammen vermutlich aus der zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts, aus der Regierungszeit von Fürstbischof Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn (1573 bis 1617). In einem späteren Siegel aus der Zeit um 1650 stehen die Umschrift SIGIL DES FLECKENS SVLCZTAL und das gleiche Bild. Das Wappen geriet im 19. Jahrhundert in Vergessenheit und erscheint auch nicht im damaligen Schrifttum. Die Wiederannahme erfolgte 1959. Der Großbuchstabe ist der Anfangsbuchstabe des Ortsnamens und dient zur Unterscheidung von anderen Wappen. Bäume waren beliebte Bilder in Ortssiegeln des 16. Jahrhunderts.
