Deutsch: Im Ottobeurer Chronicon von 1180 gehörte Westerheim bereits zum Stiftungsgut des Klosters, das 764 gegründet worden war. Im 14. Jahrhundert taucht die Unterscheidung in Ober- und Unterwestheim erstmals auf; seit 1818 bilden beide Orte eine Gemeinde. Das Kloster Ottobeuren konnte seinen Besitz in Westerheim im Lauf der Jahre vergrößern. Seit 1451 hatte es in Unterwesterheim die niedere Gerichtsbarkeit inne und war Ortsherr von ganz Westerheim bis zur Säkularisation 1803. An diese lang währende Verbindung erinnert die goldene Rosette auf schwarzem Feld aus dem Stiftswappen. Das rote Doppelkreuz und die darüber schwebende Taube weisen auf das Heilig-Geist-Spital von Memmingen hin, das 1364 Vogtrecht und Kirchensatz in Westerheim erwarb. Als sich das Heilig-Geist-Spital 1365 in das Oberhospital (Kreuzherrenkloster) und das Unterhospital aufteilte, blieb der Kirchensatz beim Oberhospital, welches das Doppelkreuz in seinem Wappen führte. |
