Summary
DescriptionDamage done by the second shell which struck the Cathedral (4687985979).jpg |
English: Bomb damage in Amiens cathedral, Picardy, France, during World War I. The photograph shows clear damage to the ornate windows and masonry of Amiens cathedral. It is likely that this photograph was taken by Tom Aitken during the Spring Offensive of 1918, when German forces came closest to recapturing the important strategic city of Amiens. The famous Gothic cathedral of Notre-Dame at Amiens is the tallest complete cathedral in France. It was begun in 1220 and survived two world wars almost intact, despite attacks like the one in the photograph. |
