Summary
Description |
Wisbech Old Market, looking north-east up Chapel Road. The Octagon Chapel, opened in 1831, was demolished in 1952. "The principal trade in Wisbeach is that of corn, and the corn-market in this place is one of the most important in the country, there being about 120,000 quarters of corn annually shipped here for Lynn, Cambridge, and other places; this is grown in the neighbourhood, the amount having very much increased of late years by the recent inventions in agriculture; much of the land, which was formerly covered with fens, having thus been lately recovered." |
