Description
In 1563 John Trew of Glamorgan was commissioned to construct the first canal from just below Countess Weir to rejoin the River Exe at the City Centre. The weir that maintains the water level in the quay is named after him. Thomas Girtin was one of the most innovative English watercolourists. In the 1790s he evolved a bold style in response to the dramatic scenery he encountered in Yorkshire, North Wales, and the West Country. His works demonstrate free handling, atmospheric effects and the broad massing of form and light. Girtin visited Devon between 1797 and 1799.
