DescriptionFort New Amsterdam on the Manhatans (New York) print c1626.jpg
English: Title: "t' fort Nieuw Amsterdam op de Manhatans" (English: "The Fort New Amsterdam on the Manhatans". Manhatans is an old spelling of Manhattan. This is one of the earliest known views of New Amsterdam, 1626-1628. It was renamed New York in 1664. Drawn by Kryn Fredericks, engineer of Fort Amsterdam. It hung in Peter Stuyvesant's Council Room in the Stadt House (City Hall). It was sent to the Netherlands and rescued by Adriaen Van der Donck who included it in his book about New Amsterdam (published by Joost Hartgers, Amsterdam, in 1651). It is also known as the "Hartgers View".
