English: This is an edited version of the original, cropped to eliminate imperfections in the print and unnecessary white space. The photo shows Hovey wearing the one-star insignia of a brigadier general , so it must have been taken between 1862, when Hovey became a brigadier, and 1864, when he was promoted to major-general.
