Summary

Description
English: Germanic – Romance language border map (early Middle Ages – early twentieth century)

Map is based on work in:

Important note: As the map covers a long period of time, much of the coast of Netherlands and part of Belgium changed due to land reclamation. These changes are not shown in the map and for the sake of non-complexity my map follows the coastal contours given by Van Durme. The coastal changes happened north of where the language border existed and do not affect the focus of the map. On the map, in places where the language border overlaps with a country's border, only the language border is shown, as that is the focus of the map and to prevent over-complicating the image. A similar rationale is used for rivers and state borders, with parts of a river given precedence over the border where there is overlap. To make sure that modern day borders of countries were accurately displayed in my map; online cartographic sources: Google Maps, Open Street Map and Bing Maps were extensively consulted.
