Description

The building was designed by the architects Martin Gropius and Heino Schmieden for a Museum of Decorative Arts. The style of the 1881 opened museum, which is built around a vast glass-covered atrium, is in the school of the Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841). The decorations on the façade evoke the arts and crafts and the aims of these decorative activities. Badly damaged by wartime bombing, and then located very close to the wall, it was rebuilt in 1981 and refurbished in 1999. It is now used for temporary art exhibitions.
