Description

A female Humpback whale with her calf.

Humpback whales are baleen whales. Rather than teeth, they have fringed overlapping plates hanging down from each side of the upper jaw, called baleen plates. The plates are made of keratin. Humpbacks' heads are broad and rounded and covered with knobs, called tubercles. Each knob contains at least one stiff hair.

•Calf Weight: 1 ton.
•Gestation Period: 10-18 months.
