Summary

Description
English: An early 17th century mechanical tower clock at Läckö castle, Sweden. The pendulum, visible at center front, is driven by a verge escapement, top center. The timekeeping geartrain, at left of center, was originally driven by a weight suspended by a cord wrapped around the drum at lower left. The cord originally passed through a hole in the floor where the clock was installed, with the weights hanging in the room below. This was a striking clock, which rang bells in the clock tower. The mechanism to the right of center was the striking train which rang the bells, originally powered by a second weight suspended by a cord wrapped around the righthand drum. The verge escapement indicates this was an early clock, made before tower clocks adopted the anchor escapement around 1700.
