On November 14, 2012, MTA Long Island Rail Road restored train service to the Long Beach Branch, which was the branch hardest hit by flooding from Hurricane Sandy.
With the third rail electrical system still damaged, the LIRR was able to restore shuttle service using diesel trains usually reserved for other branches. Before the service restoration, the LIRR had been providing temporary replacement bus service while the branch's tracks, signals and switches were restored to the point they could carry the diesel trains.
MTA and public officials celebrated the service restoration with a news conference at Long Beach.
In this photo, LIRR President Helena E. Williams speaks at the news conference. At left, New York State Senate Majority Leader Dean G. Skelos. At right, Long Beach City Manager Jack Schnirman, and MTA Chairman and CEO Joseph J. Lhota (far right).
