Map of the New River — in Imperial County, Southern California.

  • Residential areas are located near the river, including several communities in Imperial County as it traverses the 60 miles between the International Boundary and the Salton Sea.
  • Surface water in the New River is contaminated with metals, pesticides, VOC's, and bacteria. Pathogenic viruses have also been reported in the New River.
  • Human exposure to contaminants in the surface water occurred in the past and could occur in the present and in the future.
