Summary

Description
English: Occurrence of plastid acquisition across eukaryotes, shown in dashed arrows: blue for the first endosymbiosis directly from a cyanobacterium, and green and red for the subsequent plastids derived from green algae and red algae, respectively. The order of red algal-derived plastid acquisitions follows a hypothesis by Pietluch et al. (2024); arrows that are not supported by previous hypotheses are marked with '?'. The image was created using PowerPoint, Paint.NET and InkScape, with free images from Keeling & Eglit (2023).
