Photographed from the Bowyer bible, Bolton, England. 26.3247. Mattathias Punishing Idolatry. Mattathias with dagger raised to kill the Jew in his arms, standing over another body; smoking ruins including torso of a statue at left and a crowd of onlookers behind at right (1 Macabbees 2:23-25). 1815. Inscriptions: Lettered below image with title, text reference, production detail: "P. J. De Loutherbourg Pinxt.", "C. Heath Sculpt." and publication line: "London, Published June 1st. 1815, by T. Cadell & W. Davies Strand". Print made by Charles Heath. Dimensions: Height: 480 millimetres; width: 384 millimetres. |
