Summary

Description
English: The University of Akron's Quaker Residence Hall, 135 South Broadway Street at East Mill Street, Akron, Ohio, September 2020. Once part of the original Quaker Oats factory complex whose roots in the area trace back to 1872, the silo complex seen here dates to 1932 and contains 36 cylindrical units each 120 feet in height and 24 feet in diameter. Quaker Oats moved production out of Ohio in 1970, whereafter the complex was repurposed for various uses including a Hilton hotel that opened ten years later in the former grain silo, an early example of the adaptive reuse of such structures that became famous for its 196 completely round rooms. (Signage for the Quaker Square Inn, a later branding, remains on the building.) Purchased by the University of Akron in 2007, the hotel closed the following year and was converted to student housing.
