Summary
DescriptionR Doradus starmap.svg |
English: R Doradus is the star of greatest telescopic width (has the highest "angular dimension") as viewed from earth, other than the Sun. It is a red giant, angularly close to Alpha Reticulum. It reaches (passes through) the present zenith of the sky ("highest" point, point directly above a viewer) at about the 62th parallel south where the only intersecting land is King George Island (or rather, to use celestial terms, is very narrowly more than -62° declination), in the present astronomical epoch. The star can at all times be seen from that hemisphere; in most seasons from the tropics, subject to the sun's outshining it, and it is very limited in duration (yearly and nightly) and in declination above the horizon as to a final observation belt just north of the Tropic of Cancer. Map is useful proving red giants or red stars feature as 5 out of 6 components of narrow kite shape, main asterism, drawn for "Reticulum", and still more than are unusually numerous and intense to the immediate east, including this one, just beyond its official boundaries. The colours (red, yellow, blue) are much intensified away from white, or reddish as they largely appear but can be, by computer, saturation-enhanced using images from telescopes active in preferably arid conditions, due to water vapour's diffractive effects. The map is to be held upwards, with the south horizon/south pole to the front of the viewer. |
