"Il dipinto fa parte del nucleo di ritratti dedicati all’iconografia farnesiana e proviene dalle collezioni ducali raccolte nel Palazzo del Giardino di Parma.
L’Inventario generale corrente della Galleria e quelli precedenti di Pigorini e Ricci identificano il personaggio con Girolama Orsini (1501-1570), figlia di Ludovico Orsini conte di Pitigliano e moglie del duca Pier Luigi Farnese. Tuttavia l’impossibilità di far riferimento a una iconografia certa della duchessa e soprattutto la foggia piuttosto tarda dell’abbigliamento e dell’acconciatura, in relazione all’età mostrata dalla dama, portano a dubitare della sua identità."
