The old photograph shows the cable-way in operation in 1929 but it only appears briefly on the large scale OS maps in the 1950s, and only the tower bases depicted in the following 1960s edition. However, it was clearly still operating in the summer of 1970, as it featured in the closing violent scenes of the iconic north-east film, 'Get Carter', starring Michael Caine http://www.getcartertour.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/getcarter/drinkuperic.htm There is another photograph of the site today here 1610048 A similar cableway operated from Easington Colliery 1581907 |
