a strangedream. Throughout the night he wandered over hiscountry, which was overrun with gryphons andserpents slaying and eating his people. Heattacked the monsters, and, after many fearful 20 TEB QUESTING BEAST. contests, killed the last, although sorely woundedhimself. He woke from his dream with the memoryof the ugly creatures in his mind, and to shakeit off he summoned his Knights to hunt withhim, and they rode fast for the forest. TheKing spied a hart crossing his path, and givingchase, he soon lost his companions. The chasewas a long one; the hart still went as fast asever, and at last the Kings horse fell deadbeneath him. He sat under a tree and rested, and presentlyhe heard the baying of hounds sounding in thewoods. The noise was so great that he fanciedit must be a full pack, though what packhunted that neighbourhood he did not know.He raised his head to look for the leadinghound, and crawling towards him he saw- astrange beast, making by itself the noise of apack of hounds.

While the King was conjecturing as to themanner of creature it could be, a Knight rode up,and seeing the King beneath the tree, addressedhim as follows : * Knight of meditations, I prayyou rouse from your sleepiness to tell me if inyour wakeful moments, you have seen a strangebeast pass this way . Yes, indeed, answered Arthur, and bynow it must be two miles distant. What do youwant with it ? Sir, I have followed the beast from afar,replied he, and have ridden my horse to death.If I could find another I would pursue thecreature and overtake it, for I have never beenso near to it before, during the twelve monthsof my search. At this moment the Kings Squire led a freshhorse up for his master, and the strange Knightbegged the King to let him have it.
