Object history Die Kirche ist heraldisch stilisiertes Abbild der aus dem 11. Jahrhundert stammenden romanischen Kirche St. Joseph in Niederärndt, die später als Simultankirche diente. Diese Kirche hat symbolische Bedeutung als frühes Kulturdenkmal, das zugleich für die Zusammengehörigkeit der ganzen Einwohnerschaft in religiöser als auch politischer Hinsicht steht. Niederärndt kam wie zahlreiche andere Ortschaften aus den früheren Gemeinden Sigras, Steinling, Weißenberg, Namsreuth und Kürmreuth erst 1972 zur Gemeinde Edelsfeld. Die Gerstenähre verweist auf die Bedeutung des Braugerstenanbaus im Gemeindegebiet, der mit 70 bis 80 Prozent Anteil an der Getreideanbaufläche dominiert. Der Palmzweig, Attribut des heiligen Stephan, stellt eine Verbindung zum Patrozinium der von Katholiken und Protestanten gleichenteils genutzten Kirche in Edelsfeld her.
