Description
English: William Augustus Bowles (1763-1805), also known as Estajoca, Mezzotint, waist-length portrait of man in 3/4 view, wearing white shirt, metal arm band, necklaces, gorget, shoulder bag and feathered headdress. Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, Accession Number: 3765. Note: Born in Maryland of English ancestry, he was an adventurer who served with the Maryland Loyalists Battalion as an ensign during the American Revolution. Some account credit him with the name Billy Bowlegs, and connect him to piracy.
