The flag of East Germany was adopted in 1959. The flag of East Germany used from 1949 to 1959 was identical to the West German flag, In 1959 a emblem featured a compass and hammer was added to the flag in 1959 and remained in use until 1990 almost a year after the Fall Of The Berlin Wall in November 1989 .
