Independence is a census-designated place (CDP) in Inyo County, California. It is the county seat of the county. The population was 593 at the 2020 census.[3]

Independence is 41 miles (66 kilometres) south-southeast of Bishop. It is at an elevation of 3,930 feet (1,200 metres).
