Invincible (TV series)
Invincible is an adult animated superhero series produced by Amazon. The series revolves around Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), a 17-year old superhero whose father is the most powerful being on the planet, Omni-Man (J. K. Simmons). As Mark develops powers of his own, he discovers his father’s legacy may not be as heroic as it seems.
Unlike other superhero stories, Invincible is a complete and linear tale. When characters die, they often stay dead, despite the trope of comic-book deaths. Each and every event shapes the story, as it did in the now-complete comic.
The series is based on the Skybound/Image Comics title of the same name by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley. Invincible debuted on Amazon Prime on March 26, 2021.
Season 2 of Invincible released on March 14, 2024. The show's third season released on February 6, 2025. Season 4 released on March 18 2026. Season 5 is expected to release in early 2027.
Premise
Mark Grayson is a normal 17-year old high school student. He lives with his mother Debbie, and father Nolan, who is also Omni-Man, the world's most powerful superhero. One evening, Mark discovers that he has begun to develop superpowers, and begins training with his father to become the hero Invincible. However, his world would soon begin to unwravel around him as his father's true motives come to light.
Nolan is a Viltrumite, an alien species native to the Planet Viltrum. They are an extremely violent warmongering culture, having massacred half of their own population in order to assert their individual strength. Nolan was dispatched to Earth in order to prepare it for Viltrumite rule, but soon found himself loving the planet. However, he would resume his duties after discovering Mark has gained powers, and rebgun preparing the planet for Viltrum.
Nolan massacred the Guardians of the Globe, predicting they'd interfere with Viltrum's plans for the planet. Mark would later find this out and engage in a brutal battle with Nolan. Superior in strength and skill, Nolan brutalises his son and leaves him inches from death, before second-guessing his choices and leaving Earth, flying into deep space in an act of self-exile.
In the wake of the destruction left by he and his father's fight, Mark is guided by the government to protect the world alongside his fellow heroes, while trying to maintain life as a college student.
Characters
- Steven Yeun as Mark Grayson, named "Invincible", the protagonist of the series. Mark is idealistic and heroic in nature, having been taught to always be kind by his mother, Debbie. However, he struggles with anger issues, inherited from his viltrumite roots, and struggles to make the right choice as a superhero.
- Gillian Jacobs as Samantha Eve Wilkins, named "Atom Eve", a former member of Teen Team, and love interest to Mark. She can manipulate individual atoms, being able to transform one thing into another, and create pink constructs.
- J.K Simmons as Nolan Grayson, named "Omni-Man", the world's most powerful superhero, and in secret, a Viltrumite warrior. He is one of the most powerful Viltrumites in the current generation, and is loyal to their cause. His attempt to turn Earth over to Viltrumite rule is failed after coming to his senses following a fight with his son, Mark.
